- History: In Asia, the flowers of the Ylang Ylang tree are spread on the beds of newlyweds. It has a long history in skin and hair care products and is excellent for balancing the skin's oil production. It is frequently part of perfumes with a romantic/sensual theme.
- Aroma: Intensely sweet and smooth. Ylang Ylang is a rich floral note and somewhat jasmine-like, which is why it is sometimes called the "poor man's jasmine." It is one of the richest floral essential oil scents and is easily overdosed. Ylang Ylang is distilled over the course of 14 hours. During this time various grades of Ylang Ylang are extracted: Extra, #1, #2, #3. Leftover plant material is used to make inferior cananga oil. Ylang Ylang #3 is the most commonly offered quality.
- Perfumery Note: Base to medium. Blends well with: rose, sandalwood, spice oils (very nice: black pepper, cardamom, cloves), vetiver, citrus essential oils, geranium, lavender and many more. Ylang Ylang is a great note to use in small amounts at the bottom of a blend as it makes the blend fuller and rounder.
- Aromatherapy Properties: Strongly relaxing, which is why Ylang Ylang is often called a sedative in Aromatherapy literature. As a relaxation aid, it reduces stress and tension, helps release frustration and anger. It is also a great aphrodisiac. – the perfect scent for the bedroom.
