Herbal ABCs: Milk Thistle is a widespread, uncultivated plant throughout much of Europe, originally from the Mediterranean area, and was brought to North America by European colonists. It has naturalized in the eastern US, California and South America. A member of the daisy family (Asteraceae), Milk Thistle is also known as Mary's Thistle, St. Mary Thistle, Holy Thistle and Lady's Thistle. Milk Thistle is most often sold as a concentrated, standardized extract from the fruit of S. Marianum. Milk Thistle has been used to support liver health for more than 2000 years.
