    Product Details

    • EASY TO USE: Tung Oil is a natural oil recognized by craftsmen to offer the best hand-rubbed finish for all fine woods; simply wipe off and allow the oil to cure at room temperature
    • Permeates: Unlike other finishes that form a film on the surface of the wood, tung oil penetrates deep into the wood fibers, cures to a flexible, non-oily solid, and becomes part of the wood itself .
    • Protects: Resistant to moisture, alcohol, oil and daily wear for long-lasting beauty and protection; lasts many times longer than mineral oil and wax based products
    • Multiple Use: Amazing results on almost any surface that allows oil to penetrate: new unfinished wood, weathered wood, stripped wood, concrete floors and countertops, even brick, stone, and cast iron.
    • Ideal for Food Contact Surfaces – Since tung oil is considered non-toxic when dry, it's ideal for cutting boards, butcher blocks, countertops, wooden bowls, wooden utensils and more
    • 100% PURE Tung Oil - Hope's Tung Oil is the "best of the best" grades of pure Tung Oil. We only use premium oil, pressed from the best Tung nut crops from growers around the world.

    Customer Questions & Answers

    • Question: Is this product safe for food surfaces (e.g. is it what should be used on cutting boards)?

Answer: Per my bamboo cutting boards, if it is 100% (foodgrade)tung oil (it is nut based too by the way, in case of allergies) then yes! Although you will likely need to mix it with a 100% (food-safe) orange oil solvent.
    • Question: can it be used for wood floors?

Answer: I think a lot of people are starting to use tung oil, the real stuff- on floors. I haven't used it on floors---just on walls. The benefits are that it is pretty much non-toxic and does not emit harmful fumes as it dries. It does smell a bit while drying, but it is not toxic. It takes a long time to dry and gets harder over time...but is nothing like a polyurethane finish. it can be easily spot refinished, but will not be as durable, or ever have a gloss like a poly finish. If you are going to do a floor--make sure the floor is sanded and very clean. Plan on applying a minimum of three coats...spaced maybe a week apart, with a very light steel wooling between coats. It will be tedious and long--due to the dry and hardening time on each coat. I think if done right, it will yield a very nice finish.
    • Question: Do I have to mix this in a ratio with some other compound (it says 32 to 12 in the title)?

Answer: No, but the first coat or two penetrate better if you mix in a little turpentine or d-limonine.
    • Question: Does this need to be mixed with anything like a solvent or citrus oil or can it just be rubbed on the wood as is?

Answer: It depends on what you're using it for and which coat you're on. 1st coat can be thinned to help further penetration. Use Citrus only on food contact items. Mineral spirits or Citrus for all others. 2nd Coat full strength or less thinning. 3rd and sequential coats full strength. 0000 Steel Wool or Brass Wool prior to last coat. That's one example of an application method. More experience with Tung Oil and the varieties of mixes and applications you'll find a preferred method/mix depending on what you're coating with it. Hope that helps. Cheers...
    • Question: Can I use this on something that has been stained that will have food on it?

Answer: Yes, as long as it hasn't been covered with varnish, shellac, or polyurethane. That would prevent the oil from soaking in to the wood. It's a good choice for food safe.
    • Question: Can I apply this on a finished hardwood floor?

Answer: I would say no. Should be applied to bare wood. Never did a floor with it though, just furniture or hanging things. It seeps into the wood and the finish is fabulous. Maybe you should sand a small area down to bare wood and try it. Just one small part of a plank. After a few coats, it will look great, but it won't protect against scratches. That's why we used several coats of polyurethane on bare floors when we sanded about 800 sq feet and even that didn't protect against 2 dogs' nails!
    • Question: I've seen people mix this and pure tung oil for a cutting board conditioner, is it safe? Thank you for any help everyone.

Answer: The oil is and if you want to mix it for faster absorption you can mix with a citrus solvent
    • Question: I still have an unopened metal can of this but the product seems to have thickened up. Can it be restored with heat or still used once thickened?

Answer: Is it pure Tung oil? If it is and the can hasn't been opened, it should not have thickened. Thickening occurs when the oil begins to polymerize and you need oxygen for that to happen. Perhaps the can has been opened and the lid wasn't properly sealed allowing air to enter the can. Anyway, if the oil has thickened, it indicates that it's already beginning to "dry" (react with oxygen) which will affect its penetration and durability. If you're putting it on something you don't care about much, I suppose you could try it and see how it works. I'm a fussbudget and I'd buy new stuff. By the way, many so called tung oils aren't. They contain additives to make them dry faster. They're inferior because they don't penetrate the woods deeply, but in our culture where everything's fast including food, people don't have the patience to wait for pure tung oil to dry.
    • Question: How much square footage does 32 ounces cover?

Answer: That would depend on the wood itself how thick and how many coats you apply. I did a spinning wheel that was roughly 8 square feet red oak 3 coats, 1st and 2nd coats thinned with mineral spirits 3rd coat straight tung oil and I applied the first coat rather liberally I used about an ounce of tung oil total it goes a long way.
    • Question: Can this be used to seal chalk paint?

Answer: I have never used it for sealing any kind of paint. I have used it only on refinished bare wood, hand rubbing it in. I don't think this product would be good for your application, but I could be wrong.

Great product but not 100% waterproof
This is a great product and is very easy to use. It provides a nice finish but it's not 100% waterproof, so if you need something that will be completely waterproof, this may not be the best choice.
