Answer: The lens is flexable, and must be held 4 inches above the page for best results. Cannot be laid directly onto the page! -

Answer: I was thinking of cutting one in half to make 2 full-pocket-paperback-page-size (generally about 6.75 in. X 4.25 in.) magnifiers. -
Question: can you use it laying flat on sheet music
Answer: Just like normal magnifying glasses, to magnify a page of any type, it has to be held about 3 inches away. That's why the 'hands free' versions are on a little stand. -

Answer: I think the textured side is the one with the magnification but flip it back and forth and see which one works best... :) -
Question: would it work to enlarge the speedometer in a car?
Answer: I suppose it would as long as you could figure a way to mount it so that it is about 1" or more away from the speedometer. If you lay it flat against the speedometer it will not magnify. You have to hold it farther away to magnify. Just like a magnifying glass.
