Question: Is there a reason this product does not have the usda organic seal?
Answer: Clean Lean Protein isn’t organic because it represents the very highest quality of pea protein we can get anywhere in the world, and, at present, we cannot guarantee supply of organically certified protein of this quality. We believe organic is important for lots of reasons; from the quality of our environment to the risk of contamination of the food we eat by pesticides and heavy metals. But it’s important to appreciate that this risk occurs whether or not a plant protein is certified organic because the sources of these contaminants are from the soil, the air or the manufacturing process. They are not linked to the method of cultivation, or whether or not pesticides or artificial fertilizers are used. Our primary objective is to provide the highest quality and safest plant protein we can find. That is why we specifically source our protein from peas cultivated in Northern France where the air, soil and water is not contaminated. Also, the extraction system used to remove the protein from the peas is entirely water based, with absolutely no solvents or other chemicals used. From a consumer health point of view, the most important thing is the testing of the finished product. Nuzest products are tested routinely for heavy metals, pesticides, solvents and other contaminants. We can guarantee our products are safe. Looking to the future, as more farms are certified organic, we hope to be able to offer a certified organic Clean Lean Protein alongside our current offerings. But we can’t do that until we can guarantee a consistent supply chain from a clean environment. -
Question: Has this product been tested for arsenic, mercury, cadmium lead, pesticides and BPA?
Answer: The Pea Protein Isolate used in Clean Lean protein is tested quarterly for Arsenic, Cadmium, Mercury and Lead. Because we use BPA free packaging, we do not regularly test for BPA; there is no need. However, because of the recent publicity surrounding BPA’s and consumer concern, we will be introducing a BPA testing regime just to satisfy customers. For your interest we also test for allergens quarterly and gluten every batch. Clean lean protein is also certified by the Non GMO Project and certified Kosher and Halal. Much of the contaminant concerns is due to the source of plant proteins from regions where the soil contamination is high and where the water used in processing may also be contaminated. It is a particular problem with rice which absorbs the contaminants more readily. That is why we have deliberately chosen pea protein and to source that protein from Europe. The fields of Northern France are regarded to be very safe for growing and the process used for isolation is completely free of chemicals. I trust this helps allay any concerns you might have.
